San Juan County Criminal Court Cases

Local criminal court cases divide by offense level. The Utah District Court in the Seventh Judicial District hears felonies and Class A misdemeanors. The county Justice Court hears Class B and C misdemeanors and infractions outside a city allocation. Monticello matters use that county justice docket. Blanding Justice Court keeps qualifying city cases. Juvenile Court shares the district court address, but juvenile files do not appear in the public XChange system.

The clerk for each court is the custodian of its case file. A police report or jail booking cannot stand in for that file. Once charges are filed, the court record tracks the prosecutor's allegations, hearings, pleas, motions, judgment, and sentence. The San Juan County Attorney files county prosecutions, but the office is not a general copy counter. Start with the court shown in the caption.

San Juan County Court Levels

Two courts can operate at the same county address without holding the same records. District Court and the county or Monticello Justice Court are both at 297 South Main Street in Monticello. Their dockets remain distinct. Blanding Justice Court is at 167 East 500 North in Blanding. Offense level tells a reader where to begin, while the case caption and number confirm the correct clerk.

Searching San Juan County Case Records

Utah Courts XChange Public Case Search is the main public index for filed San Juan County cases. Court staff enter case events in CORIS, which feeds XChange. District Court coverage is substantially complete since statewide CORIS adoption ended in 1998. Justice-court coverage and converted detail vary, so a blank or thin result may still call for the clerk.

How a Criminal Case Moves

A San Juan County case file grows as the matter moves. An arrest may come first, but it is the prosecutor's filed charge that opens the court case. The judge reviews the probable-cause statement and bail, and the case then proceeds through its first appearance or arraignment. Discovery and motions create more docket entries. The outcome of a case or one charge within it.

Plea in abeyance

A plea held while conditions are completed, which may lead to dismissal.

Dismissal

The charge ends without a conviction.

Sentence

The penalty imposed after a conviction or qualifying guilty plea.

A booking charge and the filed charge can differ because they are made at different stages by different custodians. For the court outcome, use the clerk's docket and judgment. Case Record Access & Restrictions

Utah Code section 63G-2-201 establishes access to public government records, but public access remains tied to the record's classification and custodian. XChange and court counters provide the public slice of a San Juan County case file. Private, protected, sealed, and expunged material is not part of that public slice. Juvenile cases are also excluded from public XChange.

San Juan County Case Copies

If an electronic file is thin, submit the Utah Courts Request for Court Record to the clerk that holds the San Juan County case. Paper copies cost $0.25 per sheet. A storage medium costs $15. Audio or video is $15 per half-day of testimony. Fax or email costs $5 through ten pages and $0.50 for each added page, but documents already on XChange are not faxed or emailed.
